Paramedical staff marked potential cancer patches on paper images. Counting and measuring those patches by eye is slow, and gives no consistent measure of affected area between reviewers.

X-ray screening machines displayed an image and nothing more. There was no searchable record of what was scanned, at which location, by which operator.
